After receiving his B.S. and M.A. degrees from Brigham Young University, Muhlestein graduated summa cum laude from UCLA with a doctorate in Egyptology.  As a rising Biblical scholar, Muhlestein taught in both the Religious Studies and History departments of BYU-Hawaii, and is now an Assistant Professor of Ancient Scripture and Ancient Near Eastern Studies at  Brigham Young University.
