Dr. Matt Malkan,
Professor of Astronomy and Physics, '84-Present
In
addition to the advanced work he does in astronomy, Professor Malkan
has been a preeminent voice of reason in matters of University of
California educational policy. Malkan was the only professor to
testify before the UC Board of Regents in favor of retaining the SAT,
an effort that paid dividends when the board rejected UC President
Richard Atkinson's elimination effort. Malkan
is the former chair of
the Committee
on Undergraduate Admissions and Relations with Schools (CUARS) and was
a leading critic of the changes to UCLA admissions criteria, especially
the imposition of the new "comprehensive
review" admissions
standards. Malkan was also the only faculty member
to oppose the proposed diversity requirement. His hard work
secured its rejection by the UCLA Academic
Senate in 2004 by a narrow margin.Links:
